Use eDofE to register for OS Maps, which you should use to plan your route. Helpful details about that are in the next lesson. For route planning, it is much easier to use a device with a larger screen such as a laptop, pc or tablet.
You are given grid references for the start and end points for each day, as well as some intermediate points that your route should pass through.
For your route card, remember the five D’s – Destination, Direction, Distance, Description, and Dangers. More information on route planning is available in the Navigation Foundations course
As a team you should split the planning between yourselves. Remember we need 1 GPX file (from OS Maps) and 1 Route Card (from eDofE) for each day of your expedition – so 4 of each.
Send the final versions to expeditions@sesscouts.org.uk no later than 1 week before your practice expedition.
We will issue you with the OS map sheets you need for the expedition, but we will not be giving you printed A4 maps with the route marked on, or route cards, so you must prepare and print these yourselves, working from eDofE.
