3a. Navigation foundations

About Course

The Bronze Award is your first step into the world of independent exploration. This course strips away the mystery of the paper map, turning complex symbols and lines into a clear picture of the landscape around you. We focus on ‘handrail’ navigation — learning how to use paths, tracks, and field boundaries as your guide. By the end of this course, and combined with some practical tuition, you won’t just be following a group; you’ll have the skills to plan your own journeys and navigate them with certainty.

What Will You Learn?

  • Master the map: learn to read OS symbols and turn lines into a 3D mental picture.
  • Never get lost: use the 'corridor and stairs' method for pinpoint 6-figure grid references.
  • The five Ds of planning: discover the formula for a safe, well-structured hiking plan.
  • The needle: learn the essential parts of a compass and how to keep your map oriented to north.
  • Visualise the hill: understand contour lines so you never get surprised by a steep climb again.
